Use a struct in the variables scope on CF5? 4.5?

Sorrry for the post, but I can't test this anymore.

I want to do this:

variables.foo=structnew();
variables.foo.bar=blah;

But I don't want to do it if it will break in older versions of CF.
Was this legal back then?
