Need Help with Form entry

I am trying to find a simple way to automate the entry of a form field for dates. What I would like to do is allow the user to enter a date and have it automatically add the "/" where they belong. Is there a function to do this or do I need to write a _javascript_ function to test the input and either give an error or format it a replace it in the field? Before I start I wanted to make sure I was not reinventing the wheel. ;-)
