We do all of our bounce processing with a combination of iMS and BoogieBounce.  iMS-SE comes with a special email bounce processor server and we have a CFX that integrates ColdFusion and BoogieBounce.  With this combination you can get the exact details of why an email bounced.  And, if you send the email using iMS-SE then you can also track hard bounces as well.

  several fairly large mailing lists and we would like to automate the process
  of finding out which addresses are bouncing, why, and let the list
  administrator do some actions based on that.  Any ideas would be
