I had was having much the same problem intermittently for a while when using a SQL server db. Usually when I restarted CF, the problem disappeared - for a while. As a last resort, I started using the Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Driver, and haven't had any problems since. The Microsoft driver seems a LOT more stable than the bundled datadirect versions (even post CFMX 6.1 Updater).
