Yes, they work beautifully, we use them all the time, especially in 
clusters, but you have to have the CF server running as a user with the 
necessary permissions to see the network drive. Normally CF server runs as 
"system" which cannot see the network so you need to change that. Set up a 
user on both machines that has the needed permissions to see the other and 
run the CF server as that user, you set that in the services control panel 
under "startup"
