The follow-up to this. Most or all of this solution was derived from
posts on this list and Macromedia's Knowledge Base at
http://tinyurl.com/6xf62.

1. Make a new user account. Call it newUserAccount (or whatever).
2. Refer to the url above for the steps in assigning access rights to
all the directories and registry keys to newUserAccount.
3. Since we had an app using COM objects in there, use the command
'dcomcnfg' in the Run command prompt to open the Component Services
console. Assign the newUserAccount permissions to the required COM
objects.
4. Use Task Scheduler to schedule a task everytime the server reboots.
This task will map the network drive using the 'net use'  command in a
batch file.
5. Reboot the server.
6. Test this using a cfdirectory on the mapped drive.
