>My first thought is to use <cfhttp>... am I on the right road here?

Everardo: Try this...

<cfhttp method="POST" url="http://your.target.site/";>
        <cfhttpparam name="param1" value="#yourxml#" type="XML">
        <cfhttpparam type="Header" name="Accept-Encoding" value="deflate;q=0">
        <cfhttpparam type="Header" name="TE" value="deflate;q=0">
</cfhttp>

The latter two params will protect you from a connection bug that crops up when
hitting some sites using GZip compression.
