If a simple RE won't work, I usually abandon REs for a simple loop
over the string and manually replace stuff.  Start at the beginning,
find a quote.  Find the next quote, replace any == between them. 
Starting at the character after the second quote, find a quote.  Find
the next quote, replace any == between them.  repeat until you get to
the end.
