Matt, We also had this type of issue a while ago, were cftry/cfcatch didn't suppress the error. We tried everything but with no results on the cf side. We did a workaround in the presentation layer (the logic consisted in outputting raw xml strings). It was definitely a bug, but we couldn't reproduce it in other scenarios.
