Shibboleth is rather heavy weight. If you are looking for an application that can not only establish an identity, but also carry authorization information etc. it is definitely the way to go. If you just want to carry a username across domains and nothing else, I would recommend looking at http://www.a-select.org/ or even just at HTTP Digest Authentication.
