Jim, I believe most whois clients need a place to start. My tag certainly does and it requires a server attribute to be passed to specify the starting server... After it gets a response, if a referal to another whois server is required it carries that out automatically.
One would assume that Howies tag would do something similar although he will have to confirm as I have never tried his out...
