One thing I've been doing lately is:

<cfcontent reset="true" /><!DOCTYPE ...

It clears everything before the doctype and gives you a blank sheet.

This is a nice shortcut that I didn't know existed. I used to run 
getPageContext().getOut().clearBuffer() instead. Same thing.
