It sounds to me like you've found all the explanation there is - with web services, there is no state between service calls unless you explicitly build it yourself. There are a couple of approaches you can take - you can use CF's state management which relies on cookies by default, or you can build a login or initialization service, which sends the client a token which the client would then send to any other service calls it makes.
