I'll add a 'me too' to the suggestion of directly connecting the two databases. Get yourself a gui tool like mySQLFront or SQLYog. You should be able to do a direct export/import from server to server right from your desktop. All you need is a username, password, server IP and port number.
As for the client getting a line of BS from the developer, you were able to explasin the problem to us without too much technobabble. Supply your info to the client and let them decide who is full of beans.
