It is part of the trade-off of having much faster searches I guess. I do know that Verity is including a lot more information about each document now so that would definitely impact the time it takes to index each document. Wild guess here... Does your collection have category support turned on? Are you using it? Try creating your collection without category support and see if that helps with the indexing speed.
