There really isn't any significant difference. Drive mappings are primarily for the convenience of the end-user. Since in this case the end-user is your CF service, I doubt that it really cares one way or the other. As for different OSs, UNC paths will only work for SMB/CIFS filesystems, like Windows and Samba shares. Presumably, CF on other platforms could access these shares if it can use an SMB/CIFS client.
