Follow Up: Looks like the reason for my pain was that I changed the default program files directory. Even though all references were updated to the directory I prefer, MS expects something in c:\program files. Ugh.
Anyway, a quick change of the ProgramFilesDir value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion Seems to have solved the problem. Thanks to all.
