There are 191 UN member countries and the US State Department formally recognizes 192 countries. Of course, some people will add in a couple of extras like Taiwan and E. Timor and Palestine, claiming that these are sovereign nations. So when you get right down to it, you've got a maximum of about 194 possibilities and a minimum of 188 depending upon whom you ask.
