Ours has:

-Banner (logo .... information portal)
-Employee phone/pager search
-[Company] News
-Department Links (select a department to view their links)
-Company Links (Links that pertain to all employees)
-Stats
-A few other company-specific searches

The best thing to do is to have a clear understanding between you and the
all individuals that will be making decisions/suggestions of what they
need/want before you begin designing the layout. An intranet is driven based
on company-specific needs ...... what one company uses daily, may not be of
any use to another. If a section will grow over time, be sure to anticipate
that in your layout. Also, use a color scheme with no more than 3 to 4
colors.

Good Luck.
