Not really from the "view cart" page, unless there is a snippet at the
top of the cart saying "you just added ______ to your cart", and
includes the site's hierarchy location for this product.

Clicking on the product name in the cart should take you here, not the
"continue shopping" button.

Yes - "continue shopping" should go here (IMHO), but not via js
history function.

This *could* be where continute shopping goes, but really, there
should be an obvious home link already on every single page on the
site, including the cart page.
