Hell, no. He was more of a free-spirit ASP programmer. ;-) He always said I was going to too much trouble when I used option explicit.

If they were not assigned a value, then they will be an empty string (or whatever equivalent for complex variables). He just tested for x <> "" or x = "" and then did what he had to do.
