On average, I'd say the certification only indicates that you are good at studying for exams. It doesn't provide any meaningful metrics to other developers. That being said, however, they do complement otherwise talented developers' resumes.
If you are looking to get certified, I would recommend _learning_ the material and only supplement with books and software.
