Years ago, before I had CFMX, I'd written a Perl script that would generate thumbnails using the GD libraries.... as long as access to the perl script was restricted via some kind of authentication or something, you could actually just call the perl script via a hidden IFRAME, img tag or even CFHTTP - and not have to rely on CFEXECUTE even, which never seemed to work well for me! You could probably do the same thing with a php script.
