You could also consider external tool (Google Analytics or similar) to get
your metrics.

In one reverse proxy configuration I implemented I used Squid which produced
nice log files that were analyzed later.

You can log HTTP requests at the proxy, or you can have the proxy write
additional headers that can be used when you log HTTP requests at the proxy
target.
