In my opinion (that's what you asked for) the same thing can be
accomplished, better, with frames:
+-----------------+------------------------------------+
| | |
| Products/ | Shopping Cart |
| | |
| Categories | |
| | |
| +------------------------------------+
| | |
| | |
| | Selected Product Detail |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
+-----------------+------------------------------------+
Each Frame is scrollable
fewer browser compatibility issues
much less bandwidth
no need to download unchanged frames
Product Selection updates Product Detail Frame (only)
Product Detail selection Updates Cart frame (only)
much more pleasant user experience
screen never goes blank for reload
things remain in fixed locations (comforting}
faster
I find it unsettling, when gadget repositions after scrolling the screen.
I find it irritating when I move the gadget and its position is reset with
the next display.
The Floating gadget really has problems if its height is
larger (or grows to be) than the window/screen size... you can never
see or get to the items at the bottom (or top) of the gadget.
On some browsers (NN), if you resize the window to a smaller size,
the gadget will
automatically scroll right by you, and off he window, altogether.
A similar problem exists with DHTML approximation of dropdown menus...
they don't work for long lists.
You can probably correct both these problems by changing the DHTML display
based on window size... probably not worth the effort.
