Depending on your DBMS, the syntax "INSERT table_name" can be valid.  I
know it works for MSSQL.

What if you put the table name in brackets?  [table_name]

optional - can't find a reference for that right now - anyway it made no
diff; neither did specifying db.owner.table. If I populate the table via
Enterprise Mgr, the SELECT returns what it should. I'm stumped.
