Ext.get is used to find a DOM element by ID (using the Ext core). If used outside of a document.ready type scenario, and if the DOM isn't completely rendered at the time the statement is loaded, then it will absolutely error out in the way he describes. It might not be his problem, I haven't seen his code, but it is definitely a possibility.
