Your approach looks weid to me
Why do you need the first query to get the serial number to be used in 
the second
query if you already know the serial number?

Any way, shouldn't be at least something like
where serialnumber = '#serialnumber#'
in the first query?

Are serial numbers text fields in both tables?

Wouldn't use of a JOIN more appropriate in this case?
