I like your definition and would like to add it to the HoF info for the
mailing lists if I may.
As for this thread, while its a very important topic and one that we all
have to deal with, I'd like to move it over to the CF-Community list as it
is rather OT for CF-Talk. Thanks
I hope this is appropriate use of bandwidth. Every "enterprise" must carry
some overhead as a cost of remaining oriented towards their objective (like
accounting systems or annual meetings). So it is with mailing lists as well.
While Michael as list owner makes the final decision, I suspect he takes
into consideration the consensus of those served by the list to help
clarify what their objective is and perhaps strongly suggesting the
official objective of the list.
The following is a "definition" for the concept of SPAM I wrote for some
mailing lists I helped establish in the Denver area. ---
SPAM is ANY post that has an unsolicited commercial intent, not in response
to a genuine request for such information -- sent purely for the purpose of
benefiting the sender -- and NOT to benefit a "specific" identifiable
requester -- EVEN though some who did not request it may benefit by
receiving it.
We have no argument when someone ASKS -- "where can I find someone to
supply me with "Triggers and Drivers" -- assuming it is a legitimate
request (not at the urging of the supplier) -- because THAT identifiable
someone has a real need -- most of us will tolerate that -- to receive the
same courtesy ourselves. We can all individually at different times benefit
from receiving that kind of information -- that is the whole reason the
mailing lists exists, although, if not many people on the list have an
interest in "Triggers and Drivers" you may be asked to discuss it further
OFF the list -- for a good reason. SPAM can easily apply to many posts
that are NON-commercial, as well -- because they fit the same criteria --
which is what really defines the concept of SPAM.
SPAM is really any email posting that wastes (steals) the time and
resources of most everybody who receives it. That is what almost everyone
objects to -- and for good reason. There are about 20,000 publicly traded
(large) companies in the US, maybe 200,000 medium sized companies, and
easily 2.000,000 small businesses -- supplying products and services from
ball bearings to baby diapers. There are probably similar numbers of
businesses in India. What if each one of these 2.220,000 businesses sent
YOU an email every month suggesting that you buy their product. You would
receive -- on the average -- over 70,000 emails in your email client --
EVERYDAY -- even though you have NO interest in -- or even any use for ball
bearings or baby diapers. Do YOU have time to sort through 70,000 emails
everyday -- or even 7000 -- or even 700 -- to find only those emails that
really ARE important to YOU. Would you have time to find those emails from
your customers and clients -- or would the 70,000 emails every day DESTROY
your ability to communicate with your customers and clients using email?
Effectively, those 70,000 emails STOLE from you your ability to do business
by email. That is the real "concept" of SPAM -- and that is why people
become very angry when they receive even a little SPAM.
As with most of life -- SPAM on a mailing list may be a judgement call as
to where the line is drawn (the "reasonable man" concept in law) with
respect to what is unsolicited, and what is undesirable, even what is
perhaps "OT", but some postings, many postings, are clearly on the wrong
side of that line.
