Hard to say what is going on. The following works fine for me:
SELECT node.userCity,count(node.userCity)
FROM core.users AS node, core.users AS parent
WHERE parent.userName = node.userFirstName
  AND node.userCity = 'Pasadena'
GROUP BY node.userCity

I seem to get the correct number based on the node.userCity where clause.
