For anybody who stumbles across this thread searching for a similar problem.
Two separate problems combined to make a very confusing issue. One -- The client of the first person who reported the problem had an outdated Java browser plug-in. Once they updated their JRE they got the grid applets on the server that was working properly. Two -- The new production server had improperly configured CFIDE virtual directories. The defined file path was incorrect and did not exist.
