You can use it to tell the server to generate code for another browser, and there are all kinds of uses for that. I often do this to see how sites respond to Google Search Appliances, which send a specific user agent (gsa-crawler). I also do it when using Experts Exchange - if you identify your browser as Googlebot you get the content that Google indexes. If you're using Opera, many (poorly-written) sites don't work, so you may change your user agent to something more common.
