Paul, thanks for the advice. We, too, have a test/dev environment, however that server crashed and I'm waiting for the sys admin to rebuild it.
Fortunately, the majority of our users are home for the summer, so we can afford a few moments of downtime. I don't know the budget or the size of your company/website, but my company has a development/staging environment that both replicate our entire website; This is really helpful for cases like these where you would like to make a change but you don't risk crashing a production server. In my case I would have just deleted it off our development server and watched to see if anything broke, then do it on the other servers as well.
