fckEditor (or its more modern cousin ckeditor) has a button to paste from word instead. You can have all kinds of style and markup in the clipboard and it'll strip it all out and give you just plain text entered into your field.
The user copys the text from the word document, then instead of pasting it straight into the editor, click the "paste from word" button and paste the content into the little window that pops up. When you click the button, it puts plain text into the editor.
