To answer your question:  If you guys are behind a well-configured firewall, then to 
allow your messenger to work,
you'll need to open ports up.  This always increases risk.. how great of a risk varies.

Additionally, each program likely has a number of exploits for it.. a script-kiddie 
that sees those ports open will
likely run an attack, increasing network traffic (more of a performance issue than a 
security one)

However, if there's no firewall, then all arguments are really mute.. that should be 
the first place to tighten up
security, not user's desktops.
