Yes indeed.

But I was giving an example of something changing the landscape.

We now have a universally accepted, simple, mostly logical, standard for
structuring data in a self-describing format that's both portable and
human-readable. The landscape didn't look like much that when I started
programming 20 years ago, whether SGML existed or not.
