Have you looked at the "General Info" for one of your pdfs that is producing the error?
In acrobat: File > Document Info > General Info (ctrl + d) This is where verity grabs the summary/title info for pdfs by default this information looks horrible most of the time, more symbols than characters. You might want to check it out although I've never seen the error that your getting...
