Yes I know it's slow. Supplied that you don't have to restart the server / application too often, it's not that much of an issue. It's a bit of a compromise, just to ensure that services are loaded before they are called.
I still think adobe should have gone to the effort to create a web services client within CF instead of using some open source package..
