I have finally got around to getting SQL Explorer plugin for Eclipse working
after ready some more raves about it.

After the plugin is installed you need to add the JDBC Class path for each
database you want to connect to. 

Windows -> Preferences
Expand SQL Exlporer
click JDBC Drivers
Select the Driver you want to use and click edit
Click the Extra Calss path Tab
Click Add button
Browser to the directory with the jar or zip file(s) 
    eg my sql : c:\program files\mysql\mysql tools
5.0\java\lib\mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.java
    oracle needed one jar files added, but sql server needed three


I got the ms sql drivers from here
