Embarassingly - it turned out to be a developer error!
I noticed after trying both your suggestions (and it frustratingly -
still not working)
that when in the "master" report that call the sub reports,
If you select a sub-report there is an attribute for sub-report
parameters.

Setting this value to be the same as the aparameter passed in in the
cfreport tag, made everything work as expected.

Again thanks for your suggestions...

At least I have them working now...
Despite now having a formatting issue whereby a sub report overwrites
the content of another one.
and pagination being less than consistent....

But otherwise - well on the way now, thanks!
