It already has. Partical effects, bitmap caching and overall player performance is in my view a bit of a "testing the waters" approach.
The increased performance alone should make some 3D applications viable using the current drawing API - there are already some AS 3D libraries around. At some future point I guess the player could incorporate direct access to OpenGL or DirectX but it would be a bit of a bloat - check out the size of the 3D API documentation for Director.
A nice interim measure in Player 8 would be to add some optimised native 4x4 matrix operations to the Math class - this could be implemented at the cost of a few hundred bytes and allow developers of 3D libraries to squeeze the best possible performance out of the player.
