Grant, You raise some valid points. It was a little disappointing to see the way Adobe presented the aquisition - in a very plain and corporate PDF laden page. It would have been a nice symbolic gesture to use a slick Breeze preso that MM's been using to present their financials recently.
However, I think there's still much to be optimistic about. Yes, Adobe have a much more conservative image than MM. But rightly or wrongly, that's what you need to crack the enterprise market. Within that market, there's some incredible possibilities for combining ColdFusion with Adobe's document workflow products. In this area they're actually doing some interesting stuff. There's a good overview here: http://www.economist.com/people/displayStory.cfm?story_id=3860760 It's still early days. A positive influence from Allaire certainly showed after the last merger. I'm hopeful that some of the creative culture from Macromedia will emerge at Adobe. As developers and customers, we're not powerless in encouraging that.
