I am not answering your question - just have a look at ReportLab's toolkit before you write your own. It seems great to me. We use their stuff from Python and find it excellent. They also have plugins for CF for reporting. http://www.reportlab.com/
----- Hardy, what plugins for CF are you referring to? We use ReportLab extensively throughout our site to generate PDFs, and they only have Python-based tools, and they're pretty primitive at that. I talk frequently with their developers in London, and they know very little about ColdFusion (based on discussions). Personally, I'm not a huge fan of their product because I find it to be way to rigid for laying out files (I like BigFaceless, but my company opted for ReportLab).
