You are good!

That's exactly what was happening, except I opted to use cfparam instead to
keep the object from being reinitialized when the application returned to
the main display page.  

I Discovered this, when I was stripping down the code to reply to the
earlier response asking for a basic example of my code.  I needed to
simplify in order to see the answer.
