We looked at and tested a number of different xml and OODBs. Utlimately,
nobody felt that any of them were quite up to snuff each for a variety of
reasons. Do you have any recommendations about XML dbs you've had good
experiences with (because that's ultimately where we want to go)?
Software AG's Tamino is the best native XML database available today. It's cost is in the neighborhood of Oracle if your fishing. Otherwise, i am pretty happy with the core of Apache Xindice. We ended up modify it to suit our needs, so that may be an option for you as well. Of course, we do sell our database, which is based on Xindice, but it is built specifically for the needs of our CMS. Without knowing more about your application it would be hard to recommend it for your needs.

Right now
we just store the XML in a longvarchar field in sql and extract that data
and parse the XML out into a structure. That's the main reason that we
cache everything up front - so we don't have to constantly retrieve these
large varchar fields from the DB and then parse them out.

Just be aware that those CLOBs can cause spatial problems for your whole DB, so be very careful with your schema design.
