I tend to use a) above in Sean's email. Typically a create() will return an id which is then used to retrieve the record - not only do I test that the record has been saved but also so an assertxxx() method for each field to ensure the fields are set correctly - the field values are usually hardcoded as part of the test or I create a uuid which is stored and compared later.
