Hmmm ... Hal Helms, who's a Java programmer as well as a ColdFusion programmer and seems to know and understand the benefits of static typing in Java has been writing and speaking a lot about this topic lately. You can find his newsletter at halhelms.com and his podcasts at helmsandpeters.com. Look for the stuff on "Duck Typing" or "Dynamic Typing" I've been trying my best to follow the java / static typing route in CF and found it difficult to follow through on it sometimes. In an enterprise environment, perhaps it's relatively easier. But when you're building apps for distribution, or you've got other quirks in your environment like you describe, strong typing can make your life a lot more difficult than it's supposed to (it's supposed to make your life as a programmer easier, right?). I'd suggest you read and listen to Hal's observations and see what you think. Nando dickbob wrote: Hi Tom, Thanks for your comments... |
