I would say by the time the user "knows" the name, that said name should
have already been validated by some other user validation object.
 
I guess it also comes down to whether you are wanting a fairly smart
user object or a simple, no-logic user transfer object.

I would then ask 'Is it the responsibility of the user to know his/her
name and validate him/herself?' - I would say 'Yes' 

So if that's the case then surely password validation comes under the
same situation?
