Thanks to you both - following Randall Schwartz's article, I've gotten
a nice simple sub-process approach working.  Never knew about the
Cache::Cache module - very useful (although it looks like it's been
superceded by CHI.pm).

An all-dancing all-singing AJAX approach is on the cards, but that will
need a little more research :)
