In practice, I often push my free space way below the 10% recommendation and
it's only when things get *incredibly* tight that applications slow down. 

I'll boot my laptop in target disk mode + safe mode, peripheral to a desktop
Intel mac with 3 GB RAM, see what happens. Watch this space…
